Effects of Stem Density and Reynolds Number on Fine Sediment Interception by Emergent Vegetation

چکیده
Suspended sediment collected by vegetation in marshes and wetlands contributes to vertical accretion, which can buffer against rising sea levels. Effective capture efficiency (ECE), a parameter quantifying the fraction of incoming suspended particles directly captured underwater surfaces, plays key role determining significance direct interception morphodynamic models. The ways physical characteristics collectors transitionally turbulent flows affect ECE are not yet thoroughly understood. We conducted set 12 experiments at three flow velocities stem densities (plus equivalent zero-collector control experiments), plus four where biofilm was allowed accumulate. determined that decreases with increasing collector Reynolds number (study range: 66 200; p < 0.05 for two treatments) density (solid volume fraction: 0.22% 1.17%; treatments). Adding increased all cases, multiplicative factor ranging from 1.53 7.15 different growth durations. In some impact on far outweighed density. By combining our data those one similar study, we present preliminary model quantitatively assessing effect ECE.

15 صفحه اولSediment patterns near a model patch of reedy emergent vegetation
24 This laboratory study describes the sediment patterns formed in a sand bed 25 around circular patches of rigid vertical cylinders, representing a patch of reedy 26 emergent vegetation. The patch diameter was much smaller than the channel 27 width. Two patch densities (solid volume fraction 3% and 10%) and two patch 28 diameters (22 and 10 cm) were considered. For flows above the threshold of...
متن کاملReynolds number effects on lipid vesicles
Vesicles exposed to the human circulatory system experience a wide range of flows and Reynolds numbers. Previous investigations of vesicles in fluid flow have focused on the Stokes flow regime. In this work the influence of inertia on the dynamics of a vesicle in a shearing flow is investigated using a novel level-set computational method in two dimensions. A detailed analysis of the behaviour ...

Experimental Investigation of Mixed Convection Heat Transfer in Vertical Tubes by Nanofluid: Effects of Reynolds Number and Fluid Temperature
An experimental investigation was carried out to study mixed convection heat transfer from Al2O3-water nanofluid inside a vertical, W-shaped, copper-tube with uniform wall temperature. The tests covered different ranges of some involved parameters including Reynolds number, temperature and particles volume fraction. The results showed that the rate of heat transfer coefficient improved with Rey...
